comment How can I get my portrait subjects to look natural and drop the cheesy smile?
My father hates being photographed, and he would always flip-off the camera, covering his face with his hand. The first good pic I ever got of him was because I'd just handed him his newborn granddaughter, so his hands were full. Probably not a practical solution in most cases, but it worked for me.

comment Does the cloud version of Lightroom require an internet connection?
I've read that if you are going to be without an internet connection for an extended time, you can contact Adobe Customer Support, they have a process to allow you to access it for an extended time, probably limited to the time pre-payed for by your membership.

comment Does making a focus area smaller in spot metering help with focusing?
That would be a start. Although, I like to use an 85mm range for head and shoulder portraits, I might go with something closer to 35mm or wider here.

comment Where can I buy a 77mm 12 - 15 stop ND filter at a reasonable price.
Could you stack say 85mm filters with a stepdown ring to avoid the vignetting? I haven't tried it, as I don't do a lot of long exposure work.

comment Are there any hardshell covers / protectors for lenses?
Just a thought, in the past, I've seen underwater cases for SLRs that were rigid. If you could find one for your camera/lens combo, it would give you the rigid protection you are looking for, and make the unit "beer-proof to 10 meters" as well

comment How can I best record and improve my pre-shoot planning process?
@mattdm I struggled with the survey of what people do, versus asking for a product recommendation. I took a shot at rewriting the question a bit, still not sure its much better.

comment What would cause an AF confirmation light to go on and off as I approach correct focus?
What I think Mattdm is refering to is the multiple focus zones on the 450D. I think it has 7 in a cross pattern. THere is a button on the top right of the back that lets you select the desired focus point. For your experiment, I'd select the central point.

comment Can I take pictures at Little League game without official permission or payment?
While I agree that they probably don't have a legal right to keep her from taking/selling pictures, there is more to this than where are the pictures taken. I used to be heavily involved with Recreational Youth Soccer, and all of our games were played on School or City fields. However the permits issued to us gave us limited control, and often allowed the organization to place restrictions such as no smoking or no dogs at a city park during games a practices. Generally these were safety/health related issues, but the permit did allow me to ban parents who were disruptive.
