I'm Edd. I'm a Computer Science graduate from the University of Bath, currently working as a software developer at Ocado, in Hatfield, UK. I've experience working in a number of industries, including military and civil engineering, and working on very different types of project.

I reguarly code in C, C++ and Objective-C, and have experience using Python, Java, PHP and Ada as well as the basics such as Bash-scripting. I'm keen to learn C# and the .Net framework in the near future. I'm happy to work with html and XML, and I typeset the vast majority of my university work using LaTeX.

Outside of work, I'm a keen photographer. I'm a Canon user, shooting with a 5D. I'm interested in landscapes and cityscapes, as well as bits of sports photography. I'm wanting to learn more about how I can use flash to enhance my photos.

comment Recommendations for Photo Editing/Organization Software?
I don't have a similar setup to test on as you, but there's a free trial of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 available here: adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/… . Looking at this forum post, it seems folder-watching is a feature of Elements, even if it doesn't work for some reason for this particular user: forums.adobe.com/message/4172768

comment Are there big reasons to prefer the Canon 600d vs Canon 550d?
I'm not sure I agree with this, particularly the line about wanting to be "like a pro photographer". Most professionals will want a better-spec'd camera with more features and a more rugged body than either the 550D or the 600D.

comment What is the next step up from the Canon T2i?
I don't think you can say that there's such a linear and "standard" progression. For starters, the 600D/T3i is to a large extent a newer camera in the same product band as the 550D/T2i. The linear model also doesn't account for the differences between full frame and cropped sensors; both offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, and are suited to different types of photography.

comment What should I do about Nikon D90 intermittent shutter release failure?
Have you been able to try using the camera with a remote release cable? That would determine (hopefully) if it's with the shutter button, or the shutter itself.

comment Where does the noise come from in a long exposure?
The Canon 1000D does have a Long Exposure Noise Reduction facility - it's under the menus as C.Fn-3

comment Where does the noise come from in a long exposure?
Did you have Custom Function CFn-3 (Long Exposure Noise Reduction) set to on or auto when you took this shot? This looks like long-exposure noise to me, which is caused by the sensor heating up due to the amount of time the shutter is open.

comment What are the physical limits of a mechanical shutter?
Just as an example, here's a YouTube video of a Canon 5D Mk II shutter at 1/2000 of a second, shot on a 2000fps camera.

@mattdm Thanks Matt; edited the answer to correct this. Also had the OK from Syl to embed his image of the pizza, which I've done.

I don't have my flash with me at the moment to illustrate the steps in the first section of my answer, but I'm hoping to get some photos up at some point...

comment Best auto-feed photo and/or negative scanner?
Yes the expected lifetime of a hard-drive is less than that of a photo/negative, but just because a HDD dies does not mean the file is lost assuming it is properly backed up.

comment What are some good techniques for using a monopod while shooting sports?
I don't bother with a ballhead on my monopod when shooting motorsports; it allows me to pan nicely about its sole leg. Have a play with one in a shop, perhaps?

Do you have a Flickr Pro account? Could it be that you've got close to your monthly usage allowance this month?

You can use the Nikon software, or if you already use/have Adobe Lr3 then this has tethered shooting support built right into it.

comment Upgrade advice pentax to canon + which canon 50D/60D or 7D
@toomanyairmiles Generally on StackExchange sites it's accepted (and even encouraged) to edit questions and answers, so you may want to add the above information in the question so it doesn't get lost amongst any other comments.

comment Updating pictures on Flickr with Lightroom which were originally not added with Lightroom
This is exactly the dilemma I faced a few months back. I needed to sort out quite a few things with my (relatively small) image library, though, so embarked on a mass project to start again when my Flickr account needed renewing. Took ages. Bah!

What lenses do you want it to support as well as the camera? What do you intend to use it for? Will you need to carry it?

comment Canon 5D Mark II vs NIkon D3x for studio/wedding work?
I don't feel particuarly qualified to answer, not knowing the Nikon range well enough, but wouldn't D3X vs 1Ds Mk III or D300s vs 5D Mk II be a much fairer set of comparisons?
