A zone plate is a concentric set of circles that act as a fresnel lens. Zone plate photography uses a zone plate instead of a lens to focus the light. This is similar to pinhole photography except that the image is much brighter. The visual affect is to give a soft focus with glowing areas around high contrast areas.
