There are repair shops that will give you an estimate of repair cost, or even better a no obligation quote. Then it's a simple case of comparing the repair cost with the used value of the equipment (trawling ebay is a good avenue for this), giving a slight bias toward repair to make up for the risk of buying used.

The lenses are a fairly straight forward an economic decision. The camera perhaps less so as various things wear out and fixing one thing MAY leave another fail soon afdter. Or not.
If the glass is good and the lens is not physically beaten to death then you can get a quote for repair and see how the cost compares to a new or equivalent lens.

Safe disconnect
To safely disconnect your camera just wait until the red light of the memory card has stopped blinking and then pull out the USB cord. The light is positioned in the lower right corner next to the trash button. When it doesn't blink it means that no read/write operations are taking place.

It is possible that your LCD needs replacing. Without any pictures of the actual screen it's hard to tell but generally you can only adjust the LCD screen's brightness and not the colour.
Does this happen in the menu as well? If it only happens on live view then it could be the settings. If it's on the menu too then likely the LCD is faulty.
I would ...

The Canon T2i actually uses a newer battery pack - the LP-E8 as opposed to the T1i that used the LP-E5. The LP-E8 has better battery performance, but unfortunately you cannot use them interchangeably.
This is from the PCWorld Review:
Canon upgraded the battery pack to the LP-E8 instead of the LP-E5 that
powers the T1i. The good news is that battery ...

The first option, and i guess that is what you activated can be found here:
The Canon T2i's Drive setting also accesses three Self-Timer modes,
which open the shutter 10 or 2 seconds after the Shutter button is
pressed, giving you time to dash around in front of the camera. The
third mode will take a programmable amount of shots (2 to 10 shots),

It sounds as though one of the autofocus cables inside the lens is about to fail - this is a very common problem on the kit lens and the initial problem is failure to autofocus at certain zoom settings followed by complete failure to autofocus in one direction once the cable has totally broken. It is a ribbon cable and replacements can be found on ebay for ...

Ring flash adapters for "normal" flash guns (speedlights) come in two basic configurations, which can be described best, I suppose, by referring to the two big-name brands.
There's a fixed-size adapter that attaches to a flash sitting on your camera's hot shoe, like the Ray Flash Adapter, and that needs to fit both your flash head (so it can clamp in place) ...

You certainly can convert the camera yourself but it's a complicated procedure that involves dismantling a lot of the camera. Unless you've done anything similar before I wouldn't advise it.
There are two companies I know of in the UK, Advanced Camera Services (whose website seems to have been hacked) and ProTech. I had a 450D converted by ProTech and was ...

Looks like you can do it yourself, but more risky work than I'd prefer! I can't speak on whether it's worth it or not.
If you've got basic tools already, you can get the IR filter for around US$180.
There are detailed instructions for the 500D here.
This site is selling the filter for US$180. I'd look around though, I'm sure you can find it for ...

Magic Lantern is definitely the easiest way to find the info you require. I, too, have had the various releases of ML installed for quite some time now on my Canon t2i/550D with absolutely NO issues. Have a look at http://www.magiclantern.fm/ for details.
