Will a Sony HDR CX260E battery get damaged if I leave the camera charging while I sleep? Does it really stop charging when the orange charging LED is off?

This question appears to be off-topic. The users who voted to close gave this specific reason:

The manual doesn't indicate any risk in both the section on charging and the appendix section on precautions. However, this is about a video camera and that is off-topic here I'm afraid. – John Cavan Jul 10 '13 at 2:53

Any modern electronics device should have voltage regulation and auto-shutoff for charging now. It would be a fire hazard for it not to and it's dirt cheap to implement since most of the hardware already needs to be there to get regulated power out of the battery. The only possible exceptions might be with a third party battery or charger, but even then it should normally be ok as long as it's a reputable third party.

Should have, or do have? I agree most should be safe, but best to consult manual surely? – MikeW Jul 10 '13 at 1:09
