Not sure if this type of question is OT, but it should certainly be CW. –  Peter Boughton Jul 15 '10 at 23:36
Off topic perhaps, but definitely appropriate and should be here. –  Reid Jul 16 '10 at 0:21
@jrista: If it's truly off-topic, it should be closed, not tagged. I think this question is on-topic (it clearly is related to photography, at least), but is a rhetorical question used solely to start a discussion, and this is not a discussion board nor are discussion lists aren't really what we want. –  Roger Pate Jul 16 '10 at 3:37
@Roger: In general, I totally agree. I'm not advocating that we allow off-topic discussion. However, as I mentioned, joke threads are a very common place thing on other stackexchange sites, and have somewhat become a part of stackexchange culture. And while they are not really on-topic, I do think they deserve a place as they are intrinsically related. –  jrista Jul 16 '10 at 3:39
@jrista - the fact that you see them as common demonstrates the 'broken windows' effect that we're trying to curtail. On SO, 10k users have been voting to close and delete most joke or 'best of' or 'list of' questions. If we permit a few of these, people will naturally want to start more discussions, which is not what we want. In the not too distant future, you'll have to work rather hard to find a 'permitted' disucssion on SO (outside of meta). –  Tim Post Jul 16 '10 at 5:38
