I know that my canon 50D doesn't have ability to shoot video, but i have heard that the software can be hacked, or that there exists some "crack" to make possible for 50D to record videos and that microphone can be also connected. Is it True? If so anyone knows how can it be done?

It's possible to record video with Canon 50D if you use the Magic Lantern Firmware. From the Magic Lantern Wiki:

  • 50D: most functions working; it has a few stability problems; movie recording works!

There's also a short video on Youtube showing that it's possible to record video with ML.

Is the quality good, what about autofocusing? and can a microphone be added somehow? – user2126092 Mar 5 at 3:37

I confirm it's possible to do video on 50d - without sound, with MagicLantern. Sounds would have to be recorded separately with another device, and synced.

Recorded video on the 50d cannot be played back on the camera. You will only be able to review it once you're on the computer.

Quality is good enough for me. I didn't check it exhaustively. I don't like video. Autofocus? Ha. Afaik only the 650D has AF during video. Nup, you can't add sound to the camera. That's a hardware thing. It just doesn't have a microphone. – Peter pete Mar 5 at 10:02
