Has anyone tried to shoot videos with blurred backgrounds using the Nikon D5100. I am trying to shoot cooking video, but with the a blurred background.
I have 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens, do I need better lens to do this?

I am producing a lot of film myself with the exact same equipment. You can ofcourse make films with blurry background with that lens. But another lens with a lower f-stop would give is some more depth of field. The trick is to use manual or aperture priority mode and choose a low f-stop as possible. And you don't want to be far away from the subject when you shoot. The closer, the more bokeh. A good thing to know is on the d5100 is that if you change the settings in liveview, it will not change. You have to do your settings and then turn on liveview. |
