I will be going to Alaska this March. please let me know which lens I should buying/leasing for the trip and what are best practice. What are cant miss places and what other equipment I need to buy. I heard about the battery dies down very soon, any suggestion about batteries or battery packs. All questions are specifically for Alaska trip. Thanks.

I own : Canon T2i, 50mm, 18-55 and 17-85mm

You will get better answers if you ask specific questions. Are you going to be photographic people, landscapes? Will you be driving or on a cruise? What sort of camera do you own, if any? Budget? – MikeW Jan 17 '12 at 18:36
Hi Alix, welcome to PhotoSE. The question you have asked is excessively broad, and as such, will be pretty difficult if not impossible to answer objectively. If you have some specific questions, such as "Which batteries provide the longest life for <specific camera X>?", or "Which lens would be ideal for use on a long trip?", you can ask those as separate questions. As for "can't miss places", that would be an off-topic question here, and such a question would be closed. This isn't a travel site, so not sure we can or should attempt to suggest places to go. Alaska is a big place. Are you on a cruise?

But if you have an iPad, Trey Ratcliff of Stuck in Customs has a free app called Stuck on Earth. This uses crowdsourcing to choose popular locations and photos. Like Google Earth/Maps, you can navigate to Alaska, zoom in on specific areas, and with the app, click on spots and view photos taken there.

Batteries will not last as long if they get cold, so you either need to keep the camera from getting cold, or else charge up your batteries more often (or carry spares).

As for lenses, I would imagine you might be taking a lot of landscape pictures. There are some good questions and answers here on the site about travel and landscape lenses.

If you are on water a polarizing filter will be very useful. It will enhance the skies, water and ice.

And make sure you have enough memory cards so that you don't run out.
