I have D40 and would like to go more ahead. Had this device for more than 6 months and learnt taking good professional pics from it. What you guys suggest?

PS: I am BIG Canon & Nikon fan!

What do you mean by "going ahead" - a smaller camera, a faster camera, a larger sensor, shooting film, getting a backup body, ...? – Imre Oct 31 '11 at 21:15
Next camera a BIG SLR!!! – RG-3 Oct 31 '11 at 21:18

6 months is hardly enough time to master photography. Look at flickr.com/cameras/nikon/d40 and see if you can reproduce similar pictures. – Sridhar Iyer Oct 31 '11 at 22:23

@klm9971, your other activity on this site was to recommend the D40 in a comment on another users' question, specifically saying "No offense to [other brand] but Nikon D40 will blow you out." What has changed in the past two weeks? – mattdm Oct 31 '11 at 23:29

@klm9971, nothing is wrong with that, if you can give good reasons it's a particular fit, rather than just bashing and cheerleading. But you didn't answer my question here: if you're recommending someone get a D40 on one hand, and looking to ditch it on the other, what's going on? That might be completely legitimate, but requires explanation in order to get good answers. – mattdm Nov 1 '11 at 13:51

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

Since you don't mention anything particular in your question that you're missing with your D40, I'd suggest

  • choosing a niche based on photography style that you want to master (not based on gear or brands)
  • getting lenses, lighting and knowledge required for that niche
  • start shopping for another camera body when you can name what features you're missing to take better photos

EDIT

Since you mentioned size as your main concern, you could try adding a battery grip to your D40 to make it more comfortable, it's a considerably cheaper option than getting a premium body (entry-level ones from Canon and Nikon are fairly similar size with your existing one).

The Canon 1d X. It's big and awesome. While you're there get me one ;)

P.S. This answer is to reflect the "WANT MOAR" feel to the question that seems more about consumerism than photography, a reaction a friend had to the release announcement when there's literally no justification for it. – Dreamager Nov 1 '11 at 3:06
