I want to buy a camera. I have no knowledge on camera. So help me to buy a best camera which is best for video and still?

@JohnCavan - I have heard that before, but we provide equipment recommendations everyday. Did the community decide something recently that prevents us from answering these? – dpollitt Sep 23 '11 at 18:19

@dpollitt — providing specific equipment recommendations is different from answering this difficult "I'm new; what's the best camera?" question. In the worst case, we'd get random recommendations and brand fighting, but we don't tend to get the worst case. Instead, we get reasonable lectures on how to make an initial decision repeated over and over again, which isn't really great for the site, or else we get requests to focus the question down til it becomes so individual that it won't be useful to anyone else ever. – mattdm Sep 25 '11 at 11:41

let us know, whether you only want "just shoot some nice photos" without modyfing and checking "some stupid and complicated settings like aperture, F-number etc." or whether you plan to go more deeple into photography and so need to have full control.

Also let us know about your budget - how much money can you give for your camera and if you are againts buying additional equipment in future - if you have an DSLR (those big cameras with interchangeable lenses and optical viewfinder) it is common, than you find out you would appreciate new lens. It is not problem but costs money.

If you need something smaller, which does not need any "upgrades" in future, you can have something similar to DSLR, but with one built in lens "for all occasions" and with electronic viewfinder and lcd screen - this type of camera is called EVF.

There is also something between - smaller cameras - something like EVF but with interchangeable lenses, but without a mirror inside (DSLR have a mirror inside, check Wikipedia to see how it works). But they are also expensive and the number of available lenses is limited (compared to DSLRs).

And finally you have compact cameras - some are cheap and easy, some are more expensive and offer much more settings.

So, decide, which sort would be best for you or (and) ask more specific question.

It very much depends on how restricted your budget is and what you want to achieve which will dictate the type of camera you get. There are several types of camera going from simple point and shoot, compact system, mirror less, DSLR and your ultimate goals will dictate the best choice for you. My advice would be to go to a specialist camera shop and talk to them about what you want to achieve they will give you advice on what to go for and even if you don't buy from them it will give you some idea. Don't go to a general electronics stores as their salesmen don't have a clue and will try to sell you the most expensive model they can.
