Please suggest a digital still camera under $600. My preliminary choises are: - Sony Alpha NEX-C3 - Canon PowerShot G12

I am looking for a compact camera. Not DSLR. A small camera that I can get to trips.

Can you provide additional information about what you intend to use your camera for? A low-end DSLR is easily within the $600 price range, but the cameras you mention aren't DSLRs, so maybe you aren't interested in that? I'm also assuming you're looking only at new, and aren't seeking recommendations for used equipment? – Flimzy Jun 22 '11 at 8:33

Also... do you want recommendations under $650, as your title suggests, or under $600 as your question states? :) – Flimzy Jun 22 '11 at 8:33

Please explain further why those two models are your preliminary choices so far, what makes it hard to choose between the two and what you are looking for in a camera (what does "best" mean for you); without these details, this question is essentially the non-constructive "What's your favorite ..." discouraged in the FAQ of this site. – Imre Jun 22 '11 at 9:08
Is that USD, AUD, CAD or something else, too? – Rowland Shaw Jun 22 '11 at 11:27

If this question had an answer, there would not be hundreds of sub-$650 cameras on the market. – mattdm Jun 22 '11 at 12:23

I'm a big fan of the Canon PowerShot S95. It's currently around $400.

For a compact, it's got the same processor as a lot of the bigger Canon cameras (Digic 4).

It has P, AV, TV and M modes. Shoots RAW. 10 MP Sensor.

And it has a control ring around the lens, that you can set to control almost any setting.

The reason why I prefer it over the G12 is because it's nice and small. Perfect to carry around all the time. I also have a DSLR for anything else.
