No more so than a paintbrush or a canvas could be considered a human eye. The camera and lens are tools used by the photographer to create an image, so a camera just paints a picture according to the instructions of the photographer. This image may then be further manipulated with editing software, so the final product becomes a function of the vision and execution of the photographer (whether he/she realizes it or not). In addition, since the images that all of us see every day are functions of our brains as much as they are our eyes, the perception you're talking about depends not only on how the photographer recorded and edited an image, but on the interpretation of each and every viewer of that photograph. In short, there's just no way to make the sort of generalization you're talking about. |
